A rare 1960's Sears Silvertone 1483 'piggyback' bass amp w/ original matching 15' Jensen-Special-Design-loaded speaker cabinet. Featuring two channels, and was originally sold as a bass amp, but is now very popular with many guitar players. Featuring two cathode-biased 6L6 GC power tubes (one vintage Silvertone 6L6GC and one Conn vintage 6L6GC from the same period) with point to point wiring, this amp has the unique crunch-heavy-tube-soaked-sound that is highly sought after. Since this was a bass amp, there is no tremolo or reverb. The cabinet has a slight sag in the grill cloth with the faint initials 'E.J' inscribed on it (which can be seen in the photos). The grill cloth could easily be re-tightened or replaced but is still very functional. There are only two mods I can find: a mini-pin female jack mounted below the Channel 2 inputs (see photo). Some previous owner may have thought it cool to jam along with an mp3 player but that jack has not been tested. Also, there is a short gray cord coming out of the back of the amp that looks like an AC female socket (see photo) but since no AC voltage was present when tested, it might be some kind of weird extension speaker cable that someone has installed. Neither of the two mods affect any function of the amp. The amp head has a newer handle and there are a few newer screws mixed in with the original screws (used for the back of the speaker cover). Carpet has been applied to the inside of the speaker cabinet to improve resonance but could be removed with a little elbow-grease. The 1/4' speaker jack that goes from the head to the speaker is made of black bake-lite and has a small chip missing out of it, but it works fine. I would rate the cabinet as 6/10 appearance-wise and the head 7/10. The amplier might benefit from having a matched set of new 6L6 GC power tubes and a recapping someday, but it sounds fine as it is, and seems to be putting out the proper amount of watts (it was originally rated by Sears at 23 watts). The exterior of the amp has been cleaned and very carefully prepared for shipment to avoid any possible shipping damage. The interior wiring has NOT been inspected, as there were no issues with the amp. Price includes FREE SHIPPING to Con.U.S. but the buyer is responsible for any return shipping costs (about $80 for Fed/Ex) for any reason, so PLEASE look carefully at the photos and ask any questions you might have before purchase. Free Shipping is offered ONLY with the full asking priceof $579. Otherwise, shipping will be the actual cost (payed by buyer) via Fed/Ex Ground or UPS Ground to the buyer's verified address.A signature will be necessary on delivery.A credit of $39 will be refunded to the buyer for local pickup in the San Diego metro area. Here is some interesting info from either the Reverb and/or Silvertone World sites about this great bass/guitar amp:
The 1483 was a fine, straightforward bass amplifier. It was listed in the Spring/Summer 1965 catalog simply as 'The Bass Amplifier.' With its no-frills tube-powered 23 watts, it's been frequently pressed into service by many top guitarists. Peter Buck of R.E.M. has used one for years, and the trend continues today, with bands like Vampire Weekend, Rilo Kiley, Jack White, Beck, and others. This reliable, vintage all-tube, compact amp is rare compared to it's big brother, the Silvertone 1484 Twin-Twelve. Introduced: 1963-Retired: 1967
